In its Fifth Edition and four categories, the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award (HIPA) continues to be a magnet for thousands of innovative photographers from around the world. Newcomers will take up the challenge and seek to bring the Awards to new heights. They will lead the eyes of millions of spectators on a quest for beauty and truth, touching their souls with tales of reality and charm.
The four categories selected for this year’s edition of the Award are bound to inspire participants into a journey that fathoms the nature of man in unseen details and explores the subtleties of our daily lives, to capture unique and outstanding moments in time.

Art critic Sebastian Johans writes in the exhibition catalogue:
It is not so strange that Wilhelm von Kröckert has a lot in common with Ernst Billgren. Wilhelm von Kröckert is Ernst Billgren. Or maybe the other way round. One might say, they even have the name in common. Wilhelm is Ernst Billgren’s middle name and Kröckert is his mother’s East Frisian maiden name and the name he held the first four years of his life.
There are many reasons for experimenting or playing with your name or your brand. Writers like to use a pseudonym when they change genres– in earlier times to hide their identities, nowadays in the hope of creating speculation about who is hiding behind the mysterious name before the great revelation. Comme le dit Claude ROY « L’humanisme a depuis une trentaine d’année été utilisé comme une injure. Je m’en servirai comme d’une louange, pour honorer Marc Riboud, cet humaniste volant. Car l’humanisme, ce n’est pas de croire que ces hommes sont identiques, c’est de savoir découvrir leur identité à travers les différences. »

These portraits, rarely exhibited all together, reveale the refinements of their composition and the unique talent of Marc Riboud. As Claude Roy said « humanism has been used for thirty years as an insult. I will use it like a praise, to honour Marc Riboud, this flying humanist. Because humanism, it is not to believe that people are the same, but to discover their identity trought their differences.
