Linn Fernström

Prata bubbla på ett strå

August 21 - September 21

Linn Fernström’s fifth exhibition at Lars Bohman Gallery will be the opening show for autumn 2014. The works exhibited in this show encompass both paintings and sculptures, and are produced between 2008 and 2014.

The artistry of Linn Fernström is immediately recognisable and in constant flux. The art is characterized by consistency, yet in continuous change. She has shown courage to challenge her technical brilliance, as her familiar naturalistic sceneries now are replaced by sketchy, subtly expressive settings. This has enabled her technique to develop in new ways.

Linn Fernström visited New York during her years at The Royal Institute of Arts. As she kept returning to the city, she pondered on the impact such an environment could have on her art. Is it the impact from these surroundings that is visible in her new works? With a more pronounced separation between foreground and background, where the latter could be described as executed in a flowing, painterly grisaille technique. The semi-transparent colours flow in thin gushes, reminiscent of works by Helen Frankenthaler, and contrast the more naturalistic foregrounds with their bold colours. The fields occasionally painted on the verge of the abstract. At other times the grey hues are abandoned for words and fragments of text to take place. Randomly splattered across the canvas in intense colours.

The figures that are associated with Fernström’s earlier works are still present. They guide us into the painterly dream world, connected to art historical references yet linked to a private, personal mythology. But the motives also escape the two-dimensionality of the paintings, and reach out into the gallery space. The iconography and intimacy of the sculptures cautiously interpreted in bronzes by Bergman’s Konstgjuteri.

Linn Fernström was born in 1974 in Örebro, Sweden. She lives and works in New York. She received her artistic training at The Royal Institute of Arts (1995-2000) and at Konstskolan Idun Lovén, Stockholm (1993-1995).

Linn Fernström has held several solo shows, among them at Eskilstuna Konstmuseum and at Maniero Associazione Culturali, Rome, and has participated in group shows, such as Absolute Generations in Venice, Italy and at Yunnan Art Institute, Kunming, China. Fernström is represented in several public and private collections, among them Moderna Museet, Stockholm and The Bonnier Collection, Sweden.

ZKM Karlsruhe - The ZKM at 25! - Program for the second half year 2014

A-Panorama-of-1960s-Revolution.jpg

The ZKM at 25!

A Panorama of 1960s Revolution

Program for the second half year 2014

With the 25th year of its founding, the ZKM now casts back to the 1960s, a decade marked by the outbreak of revolutionary movements.

With Beuys Brock Vostell from Germany, with the “godfather” of avant-garde-cinema, Jonas Mekas from the USA and with Lebel the Rebel from France, we present the origins of Action and Media art. From July through to the early part of November, the ZKM is exhibiting a panorama of fundamental, artistic revolutionary and avant-garde movements in a unique constellation of German, French and American examples, the art of which – from performance through to media – has so powerfully defined the 21st century. From December 12, 2014 on, the works of media and performance artist Lynn Hershman Leeson, a key representative of the feminist revolution, will also be on show with a ZKM retrospective.

Do Ho Suh at The Contemporary Austin this Fall

THE CONTEMPORARY AUSTIN PRESENTS A LARGE-SCALE SOLO EXHIBITION OF ARTIST DO HO SUH FOR FALL 2014

828.jpg

Do Ho Suh - September 20, 2014 - January 11, 2015

The Contemporary Austin - Jones Center, 700 Congress Ave., Austin, TX

The Contemporary Austin Laguna Gloria, 3809 West 35th Street, Austin, TX

JULY 25, 2014, AUSTIN, TEXAS - Renowned Korean-born sculptor and installation artist Do Ho Suh will present his first major solo exhibition in the US in more than a decade at The Contemporary Austin from September 20, 2014, through January 11, 2015. An influential artist operating within a distinctly twenty-first-century global mode, Suh crafts evocative and visually stunning works that reflect ideas of home, identity, and personal space. The exhibition at The Contemporary Austin encompasses the museum's two distinct sites and includes both existing works and newly fabricated pieces from several of Do Ho Suh's discrete but related bodies of work. Large-scale sculptures, installations, and works on paper will be on view at The Contemporary Austin - Jones Center at 700 Congress Avenue and at the museum's Betty and Edward Marcus Sculpture Park at Laguna Gloria, 3809 West 35th Street in Austin, Texas. More information can be found at thecontemporaryaustin.org.

Do Ho Suh's work draws on the artist's personal experiences growing up in Seoul, South Korea, studying art in the US, and moving homes several times over the course of his life. He now lives a global and "nomadic" existence, with homes in New York, London, and Seoul, and an exhibition schedule that reflects this, taking him all over the world. Inspired by his personal history and biography, the artist's sculptures and installations reveal a range of powerful themes, including notions of public versus private space, global identity, memory, and displacement. At the same time, Suh's works strike viewers with their delicate monumentality, subtle beauty, and intricate construction techniques. This distinctive combination of technical skill, striking visual appeal, and universal resonance has led to both critical and public success for the artist.
